FC Heidenheim's Bundesliga Promotion Hopes Suffer Setback as BK Häcken Knock Them Out of UEFA Europa Conference League
FC Heidenheim's European Dream Cut Short
FC Heidenheim's hopes of promotion to the Bundesliga have suffered a setback after they were knocked out of the UEFA Europa Conference League by BK Häcken.
The German second-tier side were beaten 4-2 on aggregate in the play-off round, with Häcken winning 2-1 in the second leg in Heidenheim.
Heidenheim had taken an early lead through Tim Kleindienst but Häcken hit back with goals from Jasse Tuominen and Alexander Jeremejeff.
Bundesliga Promotion Now More Difficult
Heidenheim are currently third in the 2. Bundesliga, but they are now seven points behind leaders Darmstadt 98 with just four games remaining.
The defeat to Häcken means that Heidenheim will need to win all of their remaining games and hope that Darmstadt 98 slip up if they are to have any chance of automatic promotion.
Otherwise, they will have to settle for a place in the promotion play-offs, where they will face the third-placed team from the Bundesliga.
Häcken Continue Impressive European Run
Häcken's victory over Heidenheim was their fifth win in a row in the Europa Conference League.
The Swedish side have now reached the group stage of the competition, where they will face Anderlecht, AZ Alkmaar and Apollon Limassol.
Häcken are currently top of the Allsvenskan, the Swedish top flight, and they are on course to win their first league title since 2019.
